Setting a Budget and Sticking to It
March 9, 2026
Why Budgeting Matters
Coin collecting can be as affordable or as expensive as you choose. The key is intentionality — deciding in advance how much you'll spend and on what.
Setting a Monthly Budget
Treat coin collecting like any hobby budget. Decide on a comfortable monthly amount and stick to it. Even $25/month adds up to $300/year — enough for a nice type set or several semi-key dates.
Avoiding Impulse Purchases
- The 24-hour rule — For any purchase over $100, wait 24 hours before buying.
- Want list discipline — Only buy coins on your want list. If it's not on the list, don't buy it.
- Show discipline — At coin shows, bring a specific amount of cash and leave credit cards at home.
Tracking Your Spending
Use a spreadsheet or app to record every purchase: date, description, grade, price, and dealer. This helps you see spending patterns, track your collection's value, and make better decisions.
