Building Your Toolkit
A modest investment in the right tools catches the vast majority of counterfeits.

- 10x triplet loupe ($15–$40) — The most important tool. Hastings triplet or BelOMO 10x.
- Digital scale ($15–$25) — Accurate to 0.01g. AWS or Smart Weigh brands.
- Digital calipers ($10–$20) — Measure to 0.01mm.
- Rare earth magnet ($5–$10) — Identifies iron/steel-core fakes instantly.
Intermediate ($75–$300)
- USB microscope ($30–$80) — 50x–200x with camera. Excellent for surface examination.
- Fisch detector ($50–$200) — Tests diameter, thickness, weight, reeding in seconds. Great for coin shows.

- Diameter — should match within 0.2mm.
