2x2 Flips

  • Mylar (safe) — Clear, rigid plastic. Safe for long-term storage. $0.05–$0.10 each.
  • Vinyl (DANGEROUS) — Soft, flexible. Contains PVC. Fine for temporary use but will damage coins over time. Avoid for storage.
  • Cardboard 2x2s — Stapled cardboard with Mylar windows. Safe, affordable ($0.03–$0.05), easy to label. The standard for organizing collections.

Capsules

Hard plastic capsules (Air-Tite is the leading brand) provide excellent protection. Available in every US coin size. $0.50–$1.50 each. Snap together or screw-lock. Best for valuable individual coins.

PCGS/NGC Slabs

The ultimate in protection and authentication. Sonically sealed, tamper-evident, with certified grade. Cost: $20–$150+ per coin (grading fee). Best for coins worth $100+.

Albums

  • Whitman folders — Cardboard with coin-sized holes. Inexpensive ($5–$10). Coins are exposed on one side. Good for circulated coins and beginners.
  • Dansco albums — Premium albums with clear plastic slides covering both sides. $25–$50. The gold standard for album collecting.
  • Intercept Shield albums — Include anti-tarnish technology. $30–$60.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best coin holder for storage?

Depends on value: cardboard 2x2s for organizing ($0.03–$0.05 each), Air-Tite capsules for valuable singles ($0.50–$1.50), PCGS/NGC slabs for coins worth $100+, and Dansco albums for date-set collecting ($25–$50).

Are vinyl coin flips safe?

No. Soft vinyl flips contain PVC that damages coins over time. Use only Mylar (non-PVC) flips, cardboard holders, or hard plastic capsules for storage.
